Dyslexia Assessment

Dyslexia Assessment

Full diagnostic dyslexia assessments are available for children aged 7-16.

A dyslexia assessment report will (where applicable) provide an official diagnosis of dyslexia, providing a detailed report on the students strengths and weaknesses, how this will likely impact their learning both positively and negatively and provide recommendations on how best the student can be supported both at school and at home.

A free of charge initial assessment telephone call is required to ensure your child is suitable for a dyslexia assessment.

The Assessment Process

Before the Assessment

Prior to the assessment we will arrange a time to speak in depth about your child to gain an understanding about their strengths and weaknesses, both at home and in the classroom.

I will send you a number of questionnaires to be completed by a parent, the child's class teacher and the child themselves. This information helps provide a detailed and holistic understanding of your child's background and their current abilities and is an essential part of writing the report.

Day of the Assessment

Assessments usually take place at my home near Lewes, however assessments within your own home or within school can be discussed.

The assessment process is a series of tests designed to explore: p
honological awareness, working memory, reading, spelling, writing, comprehension, processing speed and general ability. Many of the tests feel like fun activities and most students report enjoying the testing process!

The assessment process takes approximately three hours, which can be split over two separate sessions if required. Regular breaks and snacks are offered throughout and your child can request a break at any time. It is always my aim to ensure students are as relaxed and comfortable as possible.

Parents are welcome to leave or stay in the waiting room during the assessment, but are politely asked not to be present in the assessment room as this can be a distraction.

After the Assessment

From the evidence gathered during the assessment combined with the background information I will write a full diagnostic report.

This will include (where appropriate) a diagnosis of dyslexia, a detailed profile of the students strengths and weaknesses, the impact this has on your child's learning and a list of recommendations which can be used to support your child both at home and at school. The report will also likely suggest that your child be assessed for exam access arrangements within school - these assessments are used to grant special arrangements for exams such as extra time.

A follow up phone call is also included to discuss my findings further and answer any questions.

What happens if my child is not found to be dyslexic?

In some circumstances it is found that a child is not dyslexic and that other factors may be impacting their literacy abilities. If this is the case, a full report will still be written however an additional section will be added with suggestions of onward referrals.
